Fiction: “Delights of the Flesh”

In her morning shower, she realized there was flesh under her fingernails. She washed carefully, dried thoughtfully, and found him outside reading by the pool, in the shade of a tree, his handsome gray head bent in concentration.

She sat next to him and said, “Is there anything you want to tell me?”

“Hmm?” he said, and looked up from his book. “Yes, gorgeous, I want to thank you for this morning. You were exquisite.”

“So were you, love, and so tender. But perhaps I was too rough? In the shower, I found your skin under my nails. Here, let me see your back.”

“All right,” he said, and lifted his shirt. There were grooves carved in the skin over his shoulder blades, not red, not bruised, just an absence.

“Now, put your shirt down, and let me take your pulse.”

“No need,” he said. “I’m fine. Stop now. I’m all right.”

“Carl,” she said, “you’re pale. What is going on?”

He took one of her hands in both of his. The gesture was warm but his skin was chilly. “It seems to me,” he said, “that just because one of us passes is no reason to stop enjoying each other. I desire you with a longing that won’t end, ever. You know that.”

Somehow she was not shocked. He had always told her he would be the first. He had feared she would be alone, for years or decades, and she had always denied it, willed it not to happen.

“We must be careful,” she said. “I’ll be gentle with you.”

“Come and kiss me,” he said, with the slightest tremor in his voice. Did he doubt she would still want him?

In answer, she took him in her arms and pressed her lips to his, thrilled by the touch of his cool skin.
